Kingston Parks Movies Under New Management

In a unilateral decision, the City of Kingston has put the previously all-volunteer, community-driven Kingston Parks Movies project under the City-led direction of Parks and Recreation and the Office of the Mayor.  It is our understanding that a full compliment of movies will be offered under this new organization.  We would like to thank the many volunteers and supporters who helped get this project up and running.

Movies Project on Hold

Kingston Parks Movies Under the Stars is suspending all planning for the 2014 season due to a lack of communication/participation by the City of Kingston.  We hope to resolve this issue in time to present another season of movies in the parks.

Season 2 – That’s a Wrap

Kingston Parks Movies Under the Stars has just wrapped up another season of free, fun movie classics in our beautiful parks and public spaces around the city.  We had our ups and downs during Season 2, coping with an unusually wet and hot early summer, a few technical problems, and some last minute programming changes, compliments of Disney.  We want to recognize the special friends of our project who make up for all the bumps; great people like George Dawkins from Binnewater making sure we had Popsicles on the hottest night of the season in addition to ice cold bottled water every week, a real DeLorean on display for Back to the Future, book giveaways from the Kingston Federation of Teachers to keep our kids reading all summer, Music from DJ Jilly, Karate from Keith Bennett’s Karate Academy,  the Friends of Forsyth Nature Center, Creative Play with the Wayfinder Experience, fun snacks from the Kingston Candy Store and Shoprite and delicious popcorn each week from the Ninety-Nine Restaurant.  Special thanks to ProSound Entertainment for answering the very last minute calls for help and of course our team of volunteers, ranging in age from 6 to 64, who give up a big chunk of their summer to help create lasting family memories of summer and foster a stronger community.  Finally, none of this would be possible without our project sponsors who donate both money and time to make this fun community effort happen:

West Side Story, Sept. 13, 7:30pm, Rotary Park

The final movie night of Season 2!!!  Special time at 7:30pm

Music lovers unite!  Rotary Park is the place to be this Friday night, Sept 13 as we present West Side Story, sponsored by The Rotary Club of Kingston and the Sunshine Rotary Club.  It’s a grown up night so keep the little ones at home, but teens with parents or adult guardians are more than welcome.  Come sing along with the Jets and the Sharks to a classic American musical at 7:30pm!   Sadly the Gold Hope Duo will be unable to perform due to a scheduling conflict, but we will work to bring them back for Season 3.

Located across from Kingston Point Beach on Delaware Ave. you will find plenty of parking on-street or in the adjacent parking lot.  A special shuttle is arranged from the parking lot on Delaware Ave across from Kingston Point Beach.  It will be making a continual loop to the main pavilion of Rotary Park for seniors and anybody else who needs assistance for the short walk from the parking area to the movie area.  The Kingston Trolley will also be doing a free shuttle loop across the city if you need public transportation.  The trolley will begin running at 6:30pm to accommodate the earlier start time.  The nights are also getting chilly so make sure to dress for the weather.

Rotary Park is another hidden gem of the Kingston Park system. The land of Kingston Point Park has a long and intriguing history, beginning in 1897, Kingston Point has been a “must see” for visitors for over 100 years, with its beautiful views of the Hudson River, Rhinecliff and the surrounding natural areas, Kingston Point Park is an oasis in our urban city. Over the years, Kingston Point has morphed from it’s early days as an amusement park to a place of solitude and beauty. The Kingston Rotary Club led the way in the 1980′s to restore this beautiful park in order to provide a new generation of visitors with a enjoyable visit. Kingston Point has over 87 acres of open space and Kingston recently renamed a 2 acre portion of the park as Rotary Park at Kingston Point in honor of the Kingston Rotary’s ongoing commitment to the park.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Sept. 6

And so we begin the next chapter of Movies Under the Stars Season 2 – RAIN DATES AND RESCHEDULED…

Lord Voldemort got the best of Movies Under the Stars when we tried Harry Potter the first time, but now we are back to battle the forces of dark magic (and cruddy weather).  Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone will be presented at Hasbrouck Park this Friday night – Sept. 6 at 7:45 sponsored by the Hudson Valley Building Trades Council and the Laborers’ International Union, Local 17.  We will be joined by the Wayfinder Experience to lead the kids in creative play starting at 7:00pm.  Find out more at http://www.wayfinderexperience.com/  This one will be fabulous for the kids and the kids at heart.

Hasbrouck Park is located on Delaware Ave next to JFK Elementary School.  Parking is available within the park and there is a lot at the lower gate next to the Hasbrouck play space.  The trolley will be running as well.  We’ll see YOU at the Movies!

Far and Away (PG-13), Aug 30, 8:00pm at Gallo Park

And so we begin the next chapter of Movies Under the Stars Season 2 – RAIN DATES AND RESCHEDULED…

Coming this Friday, August 30th, Kingston Parks Movies Under the Stars will be presenting Far and Away at Gallo Park on the waterfront.  The movie will begin at 8:00pm.  We are calling this a “bonus night” because it never made the regular season schedule.  Our first attempt at a grown up night at Gallo Park was When Harry Met Sally, but half way through the movie the darn DVD decided it was not going to cooperate.  So we decided to mix it up, and give you a taste of an Irish themed movie to honor the Hooley that will be kicking off in the same location later that weekend on Sunday.  Enjoy some drinks and dinner at one of the many fabulous restaurants and bars down on the waterfront and then catch a movie.  There is a lot to see and do; great shops, food and the tranquility of the waterfront.  Seating is limited so please bring a chair or blanket.  Parking is available on street and the Trolley will be winding through the city to do pick ups beginning at 7:00pm.  At this point, any rain events will move the title to next season.

And now a word of THANKS!  Our regular season finale at Academy Green Park, sponsored by Academy General Insurance was delightful.  Ice cream, Will Smith and aliens; how can you go wrong?  Well a lot, but as they say the show must go on.  Steve Ellsworth of Prosound Entertainment saved our necks … again!  He and his family were wrapping up a job at the US Open in Queens and rushed back home to Kingston just in time to set us up with needed cords for our sound system.  That was the second time this season that they answered the call for technical help and we couldn’t be more grateful to have friends with obscure power cords and know-how.  Cryo Weld on Route 9W in the Town of Ulster also stepped up with free dry ice to keep the ice cream frozen.  Our sponsor for the evening Academy General Insurance did more than hand us a check, but also bagged popcorn and helped set up.  We have been blessed by an outpouring of goodwill and community spirit from great people like George from Binnewater Ice Company who provides bottled water and ice every week, the Ninety Nine Restaurant who provides us with popcorn, and all of the sponsors each week, many of whom like RUPCO, Kiwanis Club, Stewart’s Shops and the Hudson Valley Building Trades (to name a few) are back for the second year.  Finally, our volunteer committee that ranges in age from 6 to 64 gives up a lot to spend their summer lugging around heavy equipment and and fighting off mosquitoes, but helping to build a stronger community and grow some fun family summertime memories makes it all worth it.

Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones!?!  Can it get any better?  YES, watching the movie under the stars with your friends and neighbors.  Movies Under the Stars will be presenting Men in Black, sponsored by Academy General Insurance this Friday, August 23 at Academy Green Park located on Albany Ave.  This is the end of the regular season lineup so we have some fun stuff including music and dancing and extra special treats in store for our guests so come early.  The “intergalactic kegger” also known as the Men in Black movie will kick off at around 8:15pm.  Popcorn generously donated by the Ninety-Nine Restaurant and ice cold water from our friends at Binnewater is free of charge while supplies last.

If you come, there is parking available at the County lot and on-street.  The Citi-bus Trolley will also be making it’s special free run through the city.

Back to the Future, 8:15pm, Aug 16 at Hutton Park

Hutton Park is the place to be; we are going Back to the Future this Friday night, August 16.  Thank you RUPCO, our sponsor for this evening!  Tune up that flux capacitor, YES, a DeLorean will be on-site.  The Kingston Federation of Teachers will host a “Book Exchange” from 7:30pm-8:15pm for any Elementary student wishing to exchange their free end of the school year summer  book for a new or gently used one.  We will also be joined by a Registered Dietician from Shoprite to share all the nutritious options available for your family.  They will also be bringing seasonal fruit.  RUPCO, our sponsor, will have information about all of their housing and energy programs.  As always, the Ninty-Nine Restaurant will provide guests with free popcorn and Binnewater will have plenty of complimentary bottled water.

The weather has been tough this season, but we appreciate our loyal fans for understanding.  Please note the rain dates below for several of our cancelled movies and remember that dusk comes earlier.  So Hutton Park…  This is another neighborhood park with a fabulous playspace and great recreation amenities, but many people just don’t know where it is located.  Your best bet is to take a left on Grant or Lincoln from East Chester  or head up Clifton Ave.  Here is a google maps link:

Lara strums the guitar while Matt slaps the Upright Bass or picks the 5 String Banjo. They share percussion duties with their fast feet and live by the motto “If you can’t do it, kazoo it!” Their powerful voices intertwine, harmonize and amaze.
